HOUSE FREY
-Words Unknown-
Sigil: Two Towers Connected by a Bridge
Colors: Blue and Grey
Seat: The Twins
"Mayhaps"
House Frey's seat is a pair of castles on each side of the Trident connected by a bridge. This strategic location has brought great importance and wealth to their house by collecting a fee for passage across the river. They are sworn to House Tully.

The eighth Lady Frey stood beside Lord Walder's high seat. At his feet sat a somewhat younger version of himself, a stooped thin man of fifty whose costly garb of blue wool and grey satin was strangely accented by a crown and collar ornamented with tiny brass bells. The likeness between him and his lord was striking, save for their eyes; Lord Frey's small, dim, and suspicious, the other's large, amiable, and vacant. Catelyn recalled that one of Lord Walder's brood had fathered a halfwit long years ago. During past visits, the Lord of the Crossing had always taken care to hide this one away. Did he always wear a fool's crown, or is that meant as mockery of Robb? It was a question she dare not ask. Catelyn VI - 674
Catelyn sees Lord Frey with his sad, new wife and grandson Aegon Frey, otherwise known as Jinglebell.
Jinglebell is a character I’ve been wondering about for a while. I’ve commented about Mr. Martin’s use of fools before. I've read some history about actual fools in the middle ages. There were some anecdotes about some of them being mentally handicapped and kept as pets. Whether this was cruel or a way to protect them is a mystery of the ages.
While no one is defending Walder, Frey, one can argue that keeping Aegon around in motley is better than locking him in his cell for the rest of his life.
I find myself regarding him as the most tragic victim of the Red Wedding.
Because of this, I went out of my way to make jingle Bell, the least funny fool, after Patchface, of course.

GRRM basically spelling out how the Greens lost the war & how the Velaryons were never TG:
King Aegon II would soon stand naked before his enemies, all of the king’s men knew. Bloody Ben Blackwood, Kermit Tully, Sabitha Frey, and their brothers-in-victory were preparing to resume their advance upon the city, and only a few days behind them came Lord Cregan Stark and his northmen. The Braavosi fleet carrying the Arryn host had departed Gulltown and was sailing toward the Gullet, where only young Alyn Velaryon stood in its way…and the loyalty of Driftmark could not be relied upon.
“Your Grace”, the Sea Snake said, when the rump of the once proud green council had assembled, “you must surrender. The city cannot endure another sack. Save your people and save yourself. If you abdicate in favor of Prince Aegon, he will allow you to take the black and live out your life with honor on the Wall.”
- Fire & Blood, page 611
The Blacks had full control of the Realm and they obliterated the Green forces.
You are no king when you have no control over your kingdom and no army to defend you. Aegon the Usurper was forced to abdicate, but ended up murdered (just like Aerys II).
I find it incredible how even in death, Rhaenyra Targaryen inspired her forces to fight for her cause, and they won. Yet, no one fought for Alicent or her son in their time of need. On the contrary, their “allies” became turncloaks.

The pain of being a book reader that’s been made into a show
The writers and directors literally have completed series in their hands. They have the writer’s feedback as well or at least they initially said so in season 1.
Why the fuck are they deviating from canon so much? I’m trying to think HOTD as high budgeted fan fiction but damn it’s so hard. You’re getting paid a lot and working on one of the most well known series and you just fuck up
I was already pissed with Aegon’s dream nonsense as well as Rhaenys bursting out of coronation just for shock value but it’s going downhill fast. That dream leads to absolutely nothing. We don’t even have NK like the GOT version in the books. Also, still prefer book version of Alicent both age and character wise.
It was so fast paced in season 1 and now they’re dragging the story. They’re also deviating from the canon a lot
Why does Alicent actually believe “that’s what Viserys wanted”? She wants the throne for her bloodline and that’s it. It’s her wish for power, not for actually believing in whatever Viserys was saying.
It also feels like Rhaenyra would be fine with Aegon’s usurping if Luke didn’t die. She is the throne. The war started when the greens hid the death of the king.
Why is Daemon tripping for so long? He took harrenhall and that’s it. He raised the armies 3 times before the Dance. He’s a fearsome and competent general but he’s basically just a random dude who took acid trips. Ryan saying Daemon doesn’t have the skill set to raise an army lmao give me a break
Perhaps, they do not want to show cruel side of Rhaenyra by ordering the death of Nettles and not harming Daemon after Mysaria told Rhaenyra? on one hand, Daemon might have cheated with Nettles, or it was father-daughter relationship like Mushroom thinks. It feels like they’re wasting our time with Daemon’s trips like him fucking his mother nonsense to erase Nettles.
Why are they trying to erase the connection between Valyrian and dragons? No normal person can bond with a dragon. Be it Valeryon or Targaryen, you need Valyrian blood. And the whole stupid “illusion” thing in the show.
They also wasted Laena so badly in season 1. If they’re all for sapphic representation instead of just creating buzz on internet, they could have gone for Laena x Rhaenyra moments. I’m not even sure if the adult versions were on screen together. Soon after we got older Laena, she died. It’s literally book canon that Rhaenyra was “very fond” of Laena. It’s also pretty much implied that there were things between them and ot3 with Daemon
Not to mention they erased the lesbian fighter character who loves killing men and kissing women. I’m talking about Sabitha (Frey) and her lover Alysanne Blackwood. Would rather (want to) see them acting like they’re “very close friends” than a Alicole sex scene
We don’t even have Daeron lol
We haven’t seen Haelena’s mourning well instead we saw random things. Blood and Cheese wasn’t even done properly. If you’re slowing down the pace and will end the Dance in season 3, at least show more of Haelena’s mourning. Show the sibling interactions between the greens.
Another thing, who the hell is Aeriana? Her?
I’m just reminded of how after the books ended, D&D took liberties with characters and we got the clusterfuck of season 7-8. Now I feel like they’ll do the same thing in season 3
And I fear what they’ll do with Aegon the conqueror. Like maybe he tricked Visenya and Rhaenys into marrying him and conquering the 7 kingdoms? Maybe the sisters didn’t want to kill but were forced to because they’re such angels? Or Visenya can’t fight well
Why does HBO keep making shows about the house it abhors?

anyways, speaking of cannibalism, wrt frey pies in particular, it just hit me that the rat cook song is not just a way for wyman to slyly telegraph what he did w/o any of his in-world foes noticing, it could also be his justification just as much as inspiration. let's look back at how we learned of the legend through bran:
"It was not for murder that the gods cursed him," Old Nan said, "nor for serving the Andal king his son in a pie. A man has a right to vengeance. But he slew a guest beneath his roof, and that the gods cannot forgive." -Bran IV, aSoS
so, in other words: 1) violating guest right is the most heinous of crimes and 2) if guest right is not violated then murder and even cannibalizing the murdered to feed to their own kin is a-ok so long as the motive is personal revenge. by giving guest gifts to the 3 frey envoys to end any guest rite bond asap and get to the killings, wyman not only gets just a feeling of moral superiority by at least not committing the same type of crime as the enemies he killed, he also ensured that his vengeance could be divinely sanctioned as a natural right correctly exercised, unlike how the rat cook did his. he learned his lessons from this northern legend and improved upon the actions of this nightfort cook accordingly. thing is, the justified right to vengeance has to be just an old gods thing, not fitting in with the seven (which house manderly had converted to 1000s of years ago back in the reach) as the christainity stand-in, which is just evidence of the depth of manderly northern assimilation and/or that old dark ways never entirely disappear, no matter the religion. wyman manderly can still worship the "new" gods with just as much urge toward old-fashioned bloody revenge as any old gods worshipping northman, not so different from his vassal ser bartimus in the wolf's den who bragged to davos that his ancestors were likely among those who once hung slavers' entrails in a heart tree as a bloody offering to the old gods.
#valyrianscrolls#asoiaf#asoiaf meta#wyman manderly#this is why i think takes of asoiaf being purely pacifist and anti-revenge as even a wish/feeling are a tad overblown#eating your enemies and feeding them to their own kin in pies is obvsly a twisted fucked-up ott thing to do#but i think its hard to argue everyone having a hell yeah reaction to wyman's frey hatred are misreading the text#and that grrm meant for all those quotes to be in the same spirit as tyrion feeling pity for joff's death agony or theon being tortured#like c'mon it's not a matter of unquestioning admiration or fullhearted disapproval only#big walder frey is even younger than joffrey but grrm does not afford this child death-likely by another child-w the same pathos#and it just illustrates how dorne gets the shaft as a northern counterpart bc their revenge efforts are purely doomed#and the rw does get somewhat avenged while elia's rape and murder (and the death of rhaenys if you believed her aegon is yg) can never#be avenged or have any true justice either since unlike the freys & roose all the ppl responsible for crimes against elia are already dead#(with gregor being undead after brutally killing oberyn too so no satisfaction of justice or revenge there)#(c)lsb

The Red Wedding
She pressed the blade deeper into Jinglebell’s throat. The lackwit rolled his eyes at her in mute appeal. A foul stench assailed her nose, but she paid it no more mind than she did the sullen ceaseless pounding of that drum, boom doom boom doom boom doom. Ser Ryman and Black Walder were circling round her back, but Catelyn did not care. They could do as they wished with her; imprison her, rape her, kill her, it made no matter. She had lived too long, and Ned was waiting. It was Robb she feared for. “On my honor as a Tully,” she told Lord Walder, “on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy’s life for Robb’s. A son for a son.” Her hand shook so badly she was ringing Jinglebell’s head. Boom, the drum sounded, boom doom boom doom. The old man’s lips went in and out. The knife trembled in Catelyn’s hand, slippery with sweat. “A son for a son, heh,” he repeated. “But that’s a grandson… and he never was much use.” A man in dark armor and a pale pink cloak spotted with blood stepped up to Robb. “Jaime Lannister sends his regards.” He thrust his longsword through her son’s heart, and twisted.

GRRM's original outline
Other what if scenarios that I ran out of space for. Add your own if it didn't make the cut
What if Lyanna lived and became Robert's Queen?
What if Myrcella was born first and was betrothed to Robb
What if Robb and Margaery are betrothed?
What if Rhaella survived childbirth with Daenerys?
What if Joanna Lannister didn't die in childbirth?
What if Arthur took Lyanna/Jon to Dragonstone and fled with Rhaella, Viserys and Dany and regrouped with Jon Connington?
Jamie took the throne for himself after killing Aerys?
What if Elia and her children escaped to Dorne?
What if Balon died instead of his sons?
What if Jon Arryn had a son and was raised with Ned and Robert?
What if Theon did what Asha recommended and kidnapped Bran and RIckon and burned Winterfell to the ground and this leads to Theon becoming the Iron Prince and a strong contender for the Kingsmoot.
What if Rhaegar and Robert died in the Trident and Ned became King?
What if Viserys met and married Arianne Martell?
What if Domeric Bolton lived and never met Ramsay?
What if Rhaenyra won The Dance Of The Dragons
What if Arya revealed herself to Roose Bolton
What if Rhaegar married Cersei instead of Elia?
What if Ned and his brothers talked sense into Robert and he swore off his ways to be good for Lyanna and Lyanna fought in the rebellion because Aerys kills her father and brother(because Southern Ambitions)

Lyanna gave Jon a Targaryen name. She hated Rhaegar so much she did that? Or are you saying that was a show invention as well like their marriage?
#you are not dead ass trying to tell me that you believe lyanna named him aegon 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭#anti rhaegar x lyanna#anti game of thrones#once again i am saying that this a THEORY.#and naming him like. aemon after aemon the dragon knight a renown knight and romantic figure does not mean lyanna liked rhaegar’s flop ass.#when we literally have several freys named after targaryens 😭😭

Jeyne Lydden, the second wife of Stevron Frey, with their children, Aegon "Jinglebell" Frey and Maegelle Frey.
Headcanons: Jeyne died giving birth to Maegelle. Stevron is fond of his middle children but also sees Aegon as an issue to be handled because of his developmental disability and Maegelle as the reason his favorite wife is dead.
Aegon didn't choose to be the house jester and it bothers him a fair amount, but he's found pretty quickly he won't get any support being anything but that and has settled into that role, As You Do. He's found his own joy in it and is genuinely very funny.
Maegelle definitely had her own developmental issues but not in ways that are seen as such by the broader Westerosi culture, partially because her symptoms mostly weren't problems for her family. She's very much a Sansa-type autistic, making being a lady and running her household her special interest. Unfortunately she lives with a lot of internalized ableism and is terrified of being seen as any way like Aegon, or her children being seen to be any way like Aegon, so is harsh on herself and her kids both. :/
